That is fantastically steam-punky. Between this and the recent re-evaluation of the work of Nikola Tesla, I'm beginning to believe that Edison was better at self-promotion than invention.

Don't forget, though, that this earlier invention only RECORDED sound; it had no playback mechanism, which Edison's did.
