‘How China sees the world’

Brilliant Economist cover by Jon Berkeley, whose note above the Forbidden City (barely visible on this scan) reads: “With apologies to Steinberg and the New Yorker.”

The funny thing is that Chang’an and Dongdan are two of the only street names I remember from Beijing.

The chinese word for "china" is chung guo which means middle or center nation. It reflects the age old chinese picture of a world where china was situated at the center of the cosmos. The geo-centric solar system model of the middle ages is another example of how we tend to view the world through the lens of our own comparatively small existence.
